In October 1492, writing in his logbook, Christopher Columbus noted the discovery of a fully relaxed position used by South American Indians, known as the 'amac'. At this point in time, the hammock had already been in use in this region for over a thousand years. What started out as a 'fully relaxed position' quickly evolved into a piece of furniture designed to allow calm rest, and that can be used by people of almost any age in a wide range of designs and models. For ten years, JOBEK has concerned itself exclusively with this subject, so that its annual new collections now contribute to the increasing range and attraction of swinging seats and loungers. Columbus very quickly discovered the benefits of the hammock - after being the first European to see it in 1492. He did not have long to wait for more demand to develop: noble society in exotic lands soon learnt to enjoy the new feeling of being alive. Finely shaped hammocks with decorative embellished edges bear witness to their enthusiasm. JOBEK translates this hanging feeling into the future.
